Ham Wall September 2025

It has been one of the sunniest, driest and hottest summer in England that I can remember. With just a few days into the month of August, the vegetation is already changing colour. Great White Egrets gather in large numbers before they disperse for the winter. The acorns look as if they are wearing beautifully knitted woollen hats. The colours of the Common Darter are fading whilst in contrast the leaves it rests on take on the vibrancy only autumn can bring. Many butterflies and dragonflies urgently seek to carry out their life’s greatest mission. Great Crested Grebe are still feeding their chicks. Plant seed heads are bursting. Winter ducks and waders start to arrive.

The cooler air heralds the change of season and nature puts on another of its spectacular shows. So much to take in, so much to enjoy and where better than RSPB Ham Wall and its neighbouring nature reserves on the Somerset Levels.
