Wolf Spider
The wolf spider gets its’ name from the way it hunts. It chases down its prey and leaps on it. The female carries her round egg sac underneath the back end of her body, attached to the organs that produce silk, called the ‘spinnerets’. She will carry the young on her back after they hatch until they are ready to disperse. Apparently they use silk ‘parachutes’ to float away on the wind. Now that would be some photograph!

We visited the Camarque in 2021 and I wanted to photograph everything that moved. I took so many pictures that I didn’t look closely at all of them and when I went through the photos again recently I was amazed to see young on the spider’s back and was keen to find out more about it. Being widespread it didn’t take me long to find the information above on the Wildlife Trust’s website.

On the left which is another wolf spider, this time with an egg sac.
