Butterflies and moths

I am enjoying a treat in the garden this year, although my cauliflower plants wouldn’t agree with me. I am watching the eggs of a large white butterfly. Here are a selection of photos taken over a few days starting with newly laid eggs, eggs about to hatch, hatchlings and day old hatchlings. Scientifically, hatchlings are also referred to as larvae or specifically as a first-instar caterpillar since they have just emerged and haven’t shed their skin yet. I am not sure who the large interloper is on the third image, I think it could be very bad news for the cauliflower. As the day old hatchlings are already moving away from their hatching area, I will try to keep track of them and chart their progress.
