Bees

There are over 250 species of bees in the UK: bumble bees, mason bees, mining bees – and many more types. Some are social, but most are solitary – and all are important as pollinators.
They are a fun challenge to photograph but perseverance and a macro lens help. They seem to be either buried head first in a flower or quickly buzzing around to the next nectar source.
They are not always easy to identify and a variety of shots is often needed; top down, side on and head on will all help you sort out which species you are looking at.
Planting your garden or even a window box with bee friendly plants will help attract them to pose for your camera. Here are some of my recent bee photos – some taken in my garden.
