Great Bustard

The research for our winter 2023 birdwatching trip to Spain had flagged up a couple of areas where we might see Great Bustard but it was not until well into our visit that we were able to see them. One of the areas was near a reserve called Lagunas de Villafáfila (I hope to do a separate Journey page on this reserve as the hides were incredibly ornate) . When we got there we were told exactly how far we needed to drive along the road to see them. We saw 6 droves all a long way off, but after a lot of sitting and waiting – and being moved on by the police as this was a clearway – we were rewarded when a couple of droves of them came close enough for us to get these images.

A couple of days later we were at Laguna de Boarda when a small drove flew overhead.
